What is a sonographer

Sonographers, also called ultrasound technicians, use high frequency ultrasound waves to produce images of internal body tissues. These images assist physicians in diagnosing and monitoring a wide variety of conditions such as heart disease, pregnancy, abdominal and vascular disease and musculoskeletal injuries.

What do sonographers do?

Working directly with patients, sonographers explain the procedure to patients, operate the ultrasound machine and gather and record patient histories. They also process and analyse the sonographic data and provide a summary of findings to radiologists and other physicians to assist with diagnosis. Many sonographers also assist in patient scheduling, record keeping and computerised image archiving.

Where do sonographers work?

Sonographers work in hospitals, clinics, and private practices and offices throughout the world. There are also remarkable opportunities for sonographer educators, researchers and administrators.
