Diagnostic Ultrasound for Radiologists – Upper Limb

Course description

This seminar is an intensive, two-day program designed to benefit Radiologists in their daily clinical practice.

The unique format features focused didactic lectures, interactive scanning demonstrations and personal, hands-on scanning tuition. A small group ensures comprehensive and personal tuition for each participant.

Curriculum – Upper Limb

Theory of tendinopathy and enthesopathy.

Shoulder: Proximal biceps long and short head, rotator cuff interval, pectoralis major insertion, subscapularis, coraco-acromial ligament anatomy.

Supraspinatus and sub-acromial sub-deltoid bursa anatomy, pathology, sonographic technique and interventional procedures. Dynamic assessment techniques for impingement and clinical clicks.

Infraspinatus, teres minor and acromio-clavicular joint anatomy, pathology, assessment of shoulder nerves including supascapular nerve impingement and quadrilateral space syndrome.

Sonographic assessment of shoulder girdle fractures, calcium lavage and glenohumeral joint injection techniques. Detailed discussion of sonographic diagnosis and treatment options for adhesive capsulitis.

Elbow: Common extensor origin anatomy with an emphasis on individual muscle group assessment, pathology, sonographic technique, provocative testing, dynamic assessment and interventional procedures.

Lateral elbow ligaments (RCL, AL, LUCL), synovial fringe and posterior interosseous nerve with an emphasis on individual ligament assessment, pathology, sonographic technique, provocative testing and dynamic assessment.

Common flexor origin, ulnar collateral ligament, ulnar nerve and medial joint recesses anatomy (with an emphasis on individual anatomic layers and enthesis sites), pathology, sonographic technique, interventional procedures, provocative valgus stress testing and dynamic assessment.

Biceps brachii apparatus, anterior joint recesses and median nerve anatomy with an emphasis on individual long and short head biceps tendon assessment, pathology, sonographic technique, interventional procedures, provocative testing and dynamic assessment.

Wrist: Dorsal wrist tendons, intrinsic carpal ligaments and extrinsic carpal ligament anatomy, normal variants, pathology, sonographic technique, provocative testing, dynamic assessment and interventional procedures.

Volar wrist tendons, median nerve, carpal tunnel, distal ulnar nerve, superficial branch of radial nerve, anterior interosseous nerve anatomy, normal variants, pathology, sonographic technique, interventional procedures, provocative testing and dynamic assessment.

Hand: Finger flexor tendons, pulley apparatus and volar plate anatomy, pathology, sonographic technique, interventional procedures, provocative flexion stress testing and dynamic assessment. Thumb ulnar collateral ligament and Stener lesion assessment.

At the completion of the course, participants should have:

  • Thorough knowledge of upper limb sonographic anatomy and pathology
  • Enhanced scanning skills
  • Improved interventional technique
  • A better understanding of sonographer interaction and management
