Ultrasound for Emergency Nurses

This 2day “hands on” course is suitable for Emergency Nurses , Paramedics, Trainees other Allied Health Professionals working in Emergency medicine with little or no previous ultrasound experience who would like to become proficient in using ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in the clinical setting.
The small group structure ensures a collaborative and supportive learning environment, utilizing a mix of didactic lectures, demonstrations and scanning tuition. High quality equipment is used in conjunction with scanning models and phantoms, ensuring consolidation of correct scanning techniques and documentation.

This course covers the CAHPU units for:

Extended Focussed Abdominal Scan for Trauma ( E-FAST), Basic Soft Tissue Ultrasound for ED (MSK) and Vascular Access(venous ( peripheral) and arterial) and needle guidance techniques

Curriculum:

· Basic Ultrasound Physics, artifacts and instrumentation.
· Probe orientation and scanning techniques
· Knobology and image optimisation
· E-FAST and some abdominal and pelvic anatomy
· Soft tissue Ultrasound (MSK)
· Peripheral Vascular access
· Ultrasound guided needle techniques
· Scan protocols
· Image documentation and measurement protocols
· Limitations and pitfalls of ultrasound scanning

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course participants should look to have an improved understanding of anatomy, the basic scanning techniques and acquired a basic level of competence in performing an ultrasound examination for E-FAST ,Soft tissue lumps and bumps (MSK) , peripheral vascular access and needle guidance techniques
